Choose Work Options

Where can my employer learn more about implementing work options?

Commuter Challenge, a non-profit organization sponsored by the City of Bellevue and 20 other agencies and cities, offers assistance and training materials to employers wishing to create or expand work options—such as allowing telecommuting or flexible schedules. Case studies of Washington employers offering work options are online, as well as materials for making a proposal to your supervisor, manager or other company decision maker regarding implementing work options.

    What are the definitions?

    Compressed workweeks

Working longer hours in fewer days.

Compressed workweeks include working 80 hours during a 9 day span, 10 hours/4 days a week, or 12 hours/3 days a week and many other customized schedules. Compressed workweeks can be used to meet work or personal needs.

    Flextime

    Flexible start and stop times.

Flextime starts may be set or variable. Often the start and stop times are clustered around core business hours. Flextime can be used to accommodate work or personal needs, including the ability to use a commute alternative, such as the bus, carpool or vanpool.

    Telework

Working from home or a satellite location close to home.

Use may range from occasional to full time. Benefits exist for both employee and employer. Home office costs vary from minimal to significant, as do arrangements by employers to cover the costs. Some tasks and personality types lend themselves to telecommuting better than others. For more information, visit:
