Asking Your Employer for Commuting Programs
If your employer does not have a commuting program or does not encourage a certain commute option or work option that would work for you, it never hurts to ask! Research the topic (on your time) and provide a business case for implementing a commuting program, subsidy, or work options. If you can show a benefit to your employer that exceeds any costs, progress can't be too far behind.

- FlexPass
-
If so, your employer may be eligible to purchase a deeply discounted package of commute benefits, saving money and providing a more extensive commute benefit to you! FlexPass is an annual, comprehensive transportation benefits program that includes transit, rail, vanpool, and emergency taxi ride features. If your employer is currently providing a transit or vanpool subsidy, this could save the organization money while providing a more extensive commute benefit package for you. To learn more, please visit the FlexPass page and share this information with your employer.
- Pre-tax Benefits
-
If FlexPass is not the right fit for your company, check out the Pre-Tax benefits that your employer can give you. Federal law allows employers three ways to offer their employees a commute benefit free of payroll taxes to reduce an employee's cost of public transportation.
These options are:
- Offering employees a tax-free employer-paid subsidy, or
- Providing a pre-tax payroll deduction
- Or offering a combination of both
The law applies in King County when the company (or qualified third party) delivers the commute benefit to the employee in the form of a pass, ticketbook or voucher. Click here to learn more!
